I usually don’t do a lot of recruiting news, but, the hogs have commitments from 2 of ESPN’s top 10 Cornerbacks for this recruiting class.
Former Hog Jason Peters has ended his holdout and has reported to the Buffalo Bills. Darren McFadden says “It’s strictly Raiders and Razorbacks for me!“. One of the Expats will be in attendance for Monday Nights Raiders (D-Mac) Vs. Broncos (Hillis) matchup. He promises a full report.

The Women’s Basketball Schedule has been Released. A pair of Tennis Hogs grab preseason rankings. Arkansas Volleyball loses a tight one at Georgia Tech. Arkansas Women’s Soccer improves to 3-1 on the season after shutting out Jacksonville St. 4-0. Finally, for the second time in as many seasons, Arkansas Razorback sophomore Catherine White won the 4K race at the Arkansas Dual.
In case you haven’t heard, the Diamond Hogs recaptured 8th place in the SEC standings with a sweep of #13 South Carolina. The weekend Series at Baum started with a bang when Freshman Jacob House hit a 1-0 pitch into the visiting bleachers for a walk-off grand slam, giving the Hogs a 12-11 win Friday Night. Here’s Video. That powered the Hogs to the sweep with finals of 6-3 Saturday and 4-2. The Hogs Followed that up with a win over Mississippi Valley St. 12-3. The Hogs have a RPI of 16 and are still projected to make a NCAA Regional. AS360 says the season hinges on the final SEC series of the year, at Mississippi St. Here’s a look at team leader Logan Forsythe.

Hog Tyler Hill and Ladyback senior Dacia Barr have been named to the SEC Good Works Team. Alex and Andy McClary, Long Distance Track Hogs, are Profiled. The Ladybacks have another Basketball Signee. The Ladyback Softball team has been selected to the NCAA Tournament. The Ladyback Tennis team has made the Sweet Sixteen. The Ladyback Golfers have advanced out of their regional to the NCAA Championships. The Men’s Golf team looks to do the same.
Finally one of my favorite sites, the one who’s disappearance prompted me to start the Hawg Blawg, has reappeared. The Slop is now being hosted at ARSN online. Here’s The practice wrapups from the razorbloggers….4/11, 4/15. Michael Smith got a hip pointer friday before the scrimmage, but returned tuesday. Ryan Mallett is out for the rest of the spring with a thumb injury. The Traveler says it’s a fracture. FYI…USC Trojan Mitch Mustain lost the competition for the team’s starting spot…ha ha ha. McFadden maina is hitting a fever pitch.
The Diamond Hogs won their first SEC series of the year with a couple of wins over #21 Florida. The scores were UA-2 UF-1, UA-1 UF-6, UA-10 UF-4. Then promptly went out and lost at Oral Roberts, UA-2 ORU-12. They face Alcorn St. at Baum tonight. Sunday’s game time against Tennessee has been changed.
Eddie Sutton’s carrer at USF is officially over. The Expats dig into the SI archives to find an article on Joe Kline. Pelphrey is looking to improve this fall’s recruiting class. Finally, the tennis hogs are going to face Vandy in the first round of the SEC Championships.
Welcome to the weekend. Spring Football Practice opened up on Thursday. But, weather forced them indoors yesterday and today. Here’s some rules from the athletic dept. when you finally do get to attend practice. The Razorbloggers preview the spring practices. Petrino will be holding a High School Coaches Clinic. He also spoke to the media on Monday and here’s some audio clips from the Slophouse. Speaking of the Slophouse they point out an article that ran in the New York Times chronicling the road DMac had to take to get to the big time.
In Hoops News… Nate Rakestraw was given his release from the team earlier this week. No word on where he’s headed. The Expats remind everyone that it was 14 years ago today that Nolan, Corliss, Scotty, and the boys brought Fayetteville their first NCAA Tournament title. Time flies indeed. They also show how all of this years final four teams have links to Arkansas’ NCAA past. Sonny Weems won the college basketball version of the slam dunk contest and made Sportcenter’s Top Plays. Wally Hall talks about a domino effect that could send John Pelphrey to Kentucky.
The Diamond Hogs finally got a win with a 7-6 thriller at Missouri State Tuesday Night. But rain returned to the Razorbacks forecast when a game with Mississippi Valley State forced them to postpone Wednesday’s game to May 12th. Now the hogs are looking to JUCO transfer Justin Wells to make his first D-1 start Saturday during the Auburn series that starts tonight.
Ladyback diver Madison Palmer was named to the 2008 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Community Service Team. The Hog Tennis Squad will take it’s final roadtrip of the season this weekend when they travel to Ole Miss. Chris Wyrick was names Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. Kevin Trainor, who was the AD for External Affairs, will continue to serve in his current role with the revised title of Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations and Communications.
The Diamond Hogs dodged raindrops at Vanderbilt but couldn’t escape with a win. Friday’s Game was Canceled, Saturday’s Game was finished Sunday morning Ark-5 Vandy-6 (in 12), and in the 2nd game of the double header Sunday Ark-2 Vandy-6. The Gym’backs finished 6th at the SEC Championships, and Arkansas’ Co-Coaches Mark and Rene Cook tied with Auburn’s Jeff Thompson and Georgia’s Suzanne Yoculan for Co-Coach of the Year honors. The 13th ranked Ladyback Tennis Squad clinched a share of the Western Division Title with a win over South Carolina 5-2. Stacy Lewis won her 11th collegiate golf tournament Sunday as the Ladyback Golfers finished 4th overall at the Bryan National. Finally the Lady’Back Softball Squad got Swept this weekend by Georgia Fri. UA-1 UGA-3, Sat. UA-1 UGA-13, Sun. UA-1 UGA-3.
The Nationally Ranked (from #12 to #8 depending on the poll) Lady’Back linksters head to the Bryan National in Browns Summit, N. C., the final event of the 2008 season. The No. 11 Gym’Backs heads to Duluth, Ga., site of Saturday’s 2008 SEC Gymnastics Championships. The Lady’Back Tennis Squad jumped nine spots to #13 nationally and junior Ela Kaluder was honored as the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week. The Lady’Back Softball team won the annual Border War Tournament Wednesday. Lady’Back Pole Vaulter Sarah Landau was named SEC Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday while the Lady’Back Track & Field team was ranked No. 9 in the outdoor preseason rankings Wednesday.

In non hoops news…the Diamond Hogs have split the first two in their series with LSU this weekend…Friday LSU-8 UA-7 Saturday UA-14 LSU-13. The rubber game is this afternoon at 1pm on Cox Sports (CST). I saw this a while back but never linked to it so…QB Ryan Mallet’s request to have the NCAA transfer rule of sitting out a year be dropped will not be granted sources close to the program are saying. Finally the No. 33 Hog tennis squad dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 10 Tennessee on Friday.

Sonny Weems was named To AP All-SEC Team; Charles Thomas and Darrien Townes Earn SEC All-Tournament nods. The Hogs will face Indiana around 8:30pm on Friday in Raleigh, NC. Here’s the highlights from John Pelphrey’s Press Conference on the game. Billy Gillispie is High on the Hogs chances as are the rest of the SEC Coaches. Billy Packer and Jim Nantz will be doing the Arkansas/Indiana game Friday…Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel will be in Little Rock for CBS. Speaking of Little Rock, if your in the area, and don’t have the cash to pony up for some NCAA tickets, they will be having two practice sessions at Alltel Arena this Thursday that will be open to the public. In other Basketball news Former LSU Head Coach John Brady is in talks with Arkansas St. about their HC opening.
In Non basketball news Sparty the Michigan St. Spartan won the NCAA Football 09 vote and will appear on the Wii version of the game. As I’ve mentioned before Darren McFadden will appear on the cover of the XBOX 360 version. They have a nice wallpaper of DMac on their site under the downloads link. Former Hog and UAPB Golden Lion Dedrick Poole has been assigned to the Arkansas Twisters of the AF2. The #6 lady’back golfers were fourth at the end of first round play, Monday, at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. And the Arkansas Men’s Tennis Squad won their 10th of the season beating Hawaii 4-3.
After an UGLY loss to Alabama (56-59) The Hoop Hogs found themselves firmly on the bubble. After the fantastic win over #18 Vandy (78-73), at home, the Hogs took a step off of that bubble. I’m not convinced that they’re safe (a loss at Ole Miss would hurt badly) but I think they’re chances are improving. ESPN seems to agree. The Diamond Hogs are 5-1 after a Friday win over Louisiana Tech (9-8) and their first loss of the season at Texas A&M (15-7).
