FTB:Time to settle in with new wife and stop worrying about EX

This Week From the Bench…

There are still some who are obsessed with hating former Razorback coach Houston Nutt, and there are also some, believe it or not, who still love him. Many are still very preoccupied with Nutt as he shows up on radio shows in this state and at banquets.

I believe this continued preoccupation with Nutt and his occasional reappearance in his home state is not helpful for the healing process in Hogland. I believe it would be similar to dwelling on your ex-wife after she has moved on with her life. The Razorback Nation needs to do the same.

FTB:Matt Jones and the Negatives

This Week From The Bench…

Matt Jones fall from stardom was tragic this past week. Who was the writer that said show me a hero and I will show you a tragic ending (Maybe, it was Emerson). I could write a long diatribe about sports and drugs and how one is ruining the other. How the abuse of drugs and alcohol have hurt the Razorback football team in the past. I could dwell on these negatives, but instead I will dwell on something else negative instead of jumping on the Razorback football team that has had abuse problems in the past under Houston Nutt.

FTB:End of Soap Opera at UA Leads to Interest in PR Position

This Week From The Bench…

The last seven years have been a columnist’s dream, and I would like to personally thank all parties involved for providing such rich content to write about. Even in the offseason, there seemed to be one scandal after another that kept the chat rooms active. (I love to call the Internet boards “chat rooms” as a way to mock all those many media people who had no clue and used to do the same.)

So with the blaring lack of controversy at the UofA, the big issue for July is this: The University of Arkansas is hiring a personal PR flack for Petrino. That’s the biggest news around and if it doesn’t seem that big to you then I am about to manufacture it into something else like they do on Fox.

FTB:Overachieving Quarterback Must Drive Razorback Football

This Week From The Bench…

I believe the new coach is much more willing to take that chance. Whether you like it or not, the fate of this team almost certainly lies on the shoulders of your fourth-year quarterback. Players who are good as freshmen and have unproven ability will rise or fall with the play of Dick. He will make the difference if they become great as players and a team. We will see this season if Dick can pick himself off the grass with turf in his helmet and if his teammates still believe in him to carry on the battle to hit back.

FTB:Too Many Unknowns to Predict Petrino’s First Season

This Week From The Bench…

Usually at about this time during the summer, I provide my preseason prediction for Razorback football in a game-by-game scenario. But I am reluctant right now to do such a thing because I want to wait at least until the freshmen have participated in practice this August.

Why am I waiting? There is too much that is unknown. We still have to see if the power spread as envisioned by new coach Bobby Petrino will succeed in the SEC against those tough defenses. If it does not this season, my guess is that the previous coach and athletic director are going to gloat with a look of “I told you so.”

FTB:Sincerely, Robert

This Week From The Bench…

The Hogs should never be ninth or worse in the SEC based on all that program has been given to work with. If Dave Van Horn rolls out another stinker of a season like this next year, I will be calling for his head just like I did for Houston Nutt after two losing seasons.

That last sentence leads to this column, which is about all the e-mail that I get.

FTB:GSD Report-Marketing and Money off Campus

This week from the bench…

Spring football practice for the Arkansas Razorbacks is over and many pundits are already giving their preseason predictions mostly because they have nothing else to talk about. I will wait a little longer before going out on that limb because the results of spring practice offered no certainties for the success of next season.

So in the down time, I will jump on one of my favorite subjects since it’s been a few months since I have written about it. The subject of course is: Great Stadium Debate for 200, Alex.

FTB:Forward Pass Reintroduced to Hog Fans at Spring Game

This Week From the Bench…

A surprisingly good crowd appeared in Fayetteville for the Red-White game and the unveiling of the forward pass for the Hog faithful. It was also good to see the introduction of the tight-end eligible play. Maybe after an extended period of time with no passing game the Hogs can finally put somebody in the NFL who can play receiver, which hasn’t happened since Derek Russell, a product of Little Rock Central High.

Mr. Shields also touches on the NFL Draft.

FTB:Success of Petrino’s Offense Depends on Mallet

This Week From the Bench…

Funny how things turned out. Just two years removed from the Hogs having the Parade/Gatorade/USA Today Player of the Year high school quarterback who now resides at USC, the Hogs end up with Michigan’s quarterback who may be even better. The Hogs do not get Mallet if Mitch Mustain is still on campus.

He also touches on the Rakestraw transfer and looks back at the Moncrief years.

FTB:The John Pelphrey Report Card

This week from the bench…

I typically hand out report cards every year for the University of Arkansas basketball and football coaches. My report cards for the previous football coach were so bad over a period of five years that they got him fired. Since football and basketball coaches have been fired of late, there has not really been a reason to issue them grades knowing they were about to be expelled anyway, but since the Program has kept a basketball coach for over a year, it’s time to let the grades roll for the new student, John Pelphrey. The grades are an improvement over the previous guy who sat in his chair. Please have this signed by Papa Broyles and returned to me.

FTB:Bizarre SEC Tournament Produces Surprise Champion

This Week From The Bench….

I never thought I would see an SEC tournament where a team had to play twice on the same day to catch up because of canceled games. Why not just put the Hogs back on the floor against Georgia Saturday night and make it a triple header? I don’t think the outcome would have been any different. Georgia never really looked exhausted in any game. I heard they got IVs in the locker room. Whatever was in those things, the Hogs needed some as well.
