This Week From The Bench…
With the firing of Houston Nutt (and I was years ahead of the mob in
calling for his firing, by the way), new coach Bobby Petrino came in
with high expectations from the fans for a dynamic aerial assault. What
we got was a 5-7 team with a defense that gave every other team a great
opportunity to pad its offensive stats. While the sports columnist of
the statewide daily and the marks on the Internet paint a
sunshine-pumping picture, let’s be honest that Petrino’s first year
was not a success. In my annual tradition, it’s time to let the grades
roll on Petrino…
I’ve been MIA for about a week so here’s a recap of the week that was…
The Razorbloggers have their wrapup of the ugly loss to Alabama and the Good, Bad, and Ugly. Hog wide receiver Marques Wade will have surgery on his knee and will be out for the rest of the season. WR Lucas Miller suffered a concussion during the Alabama game as well. Michael Smith impressed with a 91 yard on 19 carries day.
The Expats suggest looking ahead to what’s infront of us….and reminds us of the best and worst games against the Horns.
Raycom has picked up the UA-Florida game for another 11:30 am start. Felix Jones scored another TD this past Sunday Night. David Lee brought the Wildhog to Miami and helped the Fins crush the Pats Sunday. The 2009 baseball schedule is out. The NCAA has denied the appeal of the sanctions against the Track and Field program. Finally AD Jeff Long now appreciates what the LR games bring to the University.
Arkansas Pitcher Stephen Richards was arrested for public intoxication. Here’s notes and audio from Bobby Petrino’s Sunday Teleconference and Monday’s Press Conference.
One of the Expats almost “died” when he first heard the score mid-way thru the WIU game. Here’s a report card on the game. The Razorbloggers have the Good, Bad, and Ugly. Whole Hog Sports looks back at the Off. and Def. line play. Another FYI to the local media: Houston Nutt is no longer coach…Let it go. The hogs are ranked 54th in CFN’s Rankings.
Looking forward…Petrino hopes the old cliche about the most improvement comes between weeks 1 and 2 is true. Also, the last time Louisiana-Monroe opened the season with trips to Auburn and Arkansas (2004) the Warhawks lost in a shutout to Auburn and was blown out the next week by the Hogs. Auburn shut them out again this week…Will history repeat itself?
The Women’s Soccer team defeated Oral Roberts to improve to 2-1 on the season. Finally, Former Hog Brett Goode has made the Packers as a long snapper.
I think the Expats say it best…Bullet Dodged. Here’s the official recap, stats, notes, and postgame quotes. A couple of liveblogs were going on during tonights game…Slopnet, ArkansasRazorbacks.com, and AS360. That second liveblog also has a nice photo of the, spoiler no more, hog at midfield (see after the jump). The liveblogger at the official site is Bill Smith with media relations. He has a nice childhood story posted about the logo. Not only did they debut the hog at midfield they busted out in a red on red uniform. I’ll keep my comments to myself on this outfit (see pic below as well).
SEC commish Mike Slive thanks you for the ESPN contract. The Bud Walton Renovations are underway (bye slobberin’ hog). The women’s soccer team falls to 1-1 on the year after a loss to Tulsa (1-0) in their home opener. The Women’s Volleyball team lost their first two games of the season at The Colorado State Tournament…0-3 to Colorado St. and 0-3 to Eastern Washington.
They played Denver tonight which I’ll update with a post later since I can’t find a final on that contest. UPDATE: They Lost to Denver
The Razorbloggers have their roundup posted along with a you tube highlite video and a better uniform pic than below.
Congrats to the Arkansas State Red Wolves on the win over Texas A&M 18-14.
Pics are below…
I didn’t have time to update the Slobberin’ story to a full Trough so I’ve got some news to share…
Patrick Beverly won’t be playing for the Hogs this season. Reports say it involves to academics.
Brandon Lampkin, a reserve defensive tackle, was taken to a hospital by ambulance after a neck injury during Friday’s practice, the first with pads this season. He was released Friday night and is in good condition. His Football status is unknown at this time. QB Ryan Mallett is profiled by the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. SI has the Hogs ranked 69th out of 119 FBS schools (via Expats). The Hogs are lumped in with “The Dregs” in an AOL Fanhouse preview. AOL Fanhouse also recaps the 07 SEC season and called Houston Nutt the biggest fraud. Auburn and Arkansas are joining the Spread revolution in the SEC. I didn’t link to this earlier this week but here’s the razorblogger wrapup of Media Day.
Veronica Campbell-Brown became the first Razorback in history to be chose to carry their country’s flag at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games (She carried Jamaica’s Flag). Former Hog Mitch Mustain got a break when USC starting QB Mark Sanchez injured his kneecap and will probably miss the season opener at Virginia. Mustain will compete for the starting spot against Aaron Corp for the start.
Darren McFadden had 48 yards on 12 carries during Oakland’s win over San Francisco last night. Marcus Monk had a catch for 14 yards in his debut for the Chicago Bears on Thursday. Vickiel Vaughn signed a deal with the Denver Broncos. Matt Jones was formally charged with possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) Friday. The amount of cocaine he allegedly had with him could have opened him up to a charge of possesion with intent to deliver.
Finally, two fun links for you. I stumbled across this site that has some great Razorback desktop wallpapers…Razorhack.org (for the wallpaper use this link). Most of you have probably see this already but, “Can you pass the Darren McFadden Test?” after the jump…
I’ve been slightly lazy in updating recently so there is some stuff to catch up on…
Backup Linebacker Freddy Burton was arrested for DUI this morning. Former Hog Tyson Gay qualified for the US Olympic squad in the 100m. Arkansas Hired Northern Iowa’s Chris Bucknam as the new Track and Field and Cross Country coach replacing legend John McDonnell. Sonny Weems was drafted by Chicago then traded to Denver. Steven Hill has signed a contract to play with Portland’s summer league team.
John Pelphrey auctioned off a round of golf with himself, Bobby Petrino, and LPGAer and former ladyback Stacy Lewis. It went for $5,100. Speaking of Stacy Lewis, she finished tied for 3rd at her first LPGA event as a pro…the US Women’s Open. Petrino’s not a big talker. But The Hog Blogger knows what he’s getting into with Bobby. The Razorbloggers have been counting down the best football games of ’07 (with video)…my fav’s South Carolina and LSU. AOL fanhouse has a story up about if College Football teams were comedians…Arkansas would be Larry the Cable Guy. Which lead me to two other such lists…Rappers-Kool Keith…and Simpsons Characters-Groundskeeper Willie.
Finally two stories unrelated to the Hogs…So Long to Deadspin’s Will Leitch, I echo what the Expats wrote…and RIP to UGA VI.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that today is the last day on Nolan Richardson’s Contract with the UA and it’s also Chancellor John White’s last day on the job.
This Week From The Bench…
The Hogs should never be ninth or worse in the SEC based on all that program has been given to work with. If Dave Van Horn rolls out another stinker of a season like this next year, I will be calling for his head just like I did for Houston Nutt after two losing seasons.
That last sentence leads to this column, which is about all the e-mail that I get.
A quick trough for your Saturday…
Bobby Petrino’s father got ran over by an Arkansas WR during practice yesterday…He’s okay. Cornerback Jerell Norton appears to have pulled a hamstring during the practice. WR Crosby Tuck had a bad day. Redshirt freshman Tim Dial, who was a weakside linebacker, has left the team. All of the previous stories are covered HERE. Here is the round up of Friday’s Practice Reports. AS360 visits with SI’s Stewart Mandel about Bobby Petrino. Finally the rescheduling of the Texas game from 2009 to 2015 is official per AD Jeff Long.
The Diamond Hogs still can’t find their bats in a 5-2 loss to Auburn. AS360 talks to the resident diamond hog on their staff, Brent Birch, about their turbulent season. They also link to some video from Sonny Weem’s win in the National Slam Dunk Contest. Lastly, Arkansas won it’s 10th-straight Texas Relays title in the 4×1,500-meter relay Friday.
This week from the bench…
I typically hand out report cards every year for the University of Arkansas basketball and football coaches. My report cards for the previous football coach were so bad over a period of five years that they got him fired. Since football and basketball coaches have been fired of late, there has not really been a reason to issue them grades knowing they were about to be expelled anyway, but since the Program has kept a basketball coach for over a year, it’s time to let the grades roll for the new student, John Pelphrey. The grades are an improvement over the previous guy who sat in his chair. Please have this signed by Papa Broyles and returned to me.
