In non football news…
The coach who inspired Nolan Richardson’s “40 Minutes of Hell” philosophy, Don Haskins, has died. UA freshman Ethan Tracy made his Razorback debut memorable leading the men’s golf team to victory while earning medalist honors at the Maryland Intercollegiate in Cambridge, Md., Sunday. The Women’s Soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating Samford 1-0 in double overtime Sunday.

Friday Trough

The Hogs are extending their contract with War Memorial Stadium another 2 years till 2016. The University responded to a FOIA request with an admission of 6 self-reported secondary NCAA rules violations in the basketball program involving Text messaging, improper contact with recruits, and an improper official visit. The football team is in game week mode. Freshman QB Tyler Wilson is competing for the backup QB spot. ESPN’s Chris Low visited Fayetteville and logs a couple of reports. Hog WR Marques Wade was fined and ordered to complete 16 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and careless driving. Former Hog Freddie Fairchild has been sentenced to 120 days in the county jail after he pleaded guilty to beating his girlfriend and detaining her against her will. Hog Golfer Andrew Landry was defeated in the round of 16 at the US Amateur Championship. Former Hog Veronica Campbell-Brown brought home her second gold medal in the 200 meters for Jamaica. The Razorbloggers have their Preseason Poll posted. The Hog fanbase is ranked the 5th most obnoxious in the SEC by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Finally the Expats have a Q&A up with Hog beat reporter Tom Murphy.

The End of June Trough

I’ve been slightly lazy in updating recently so there is some stuff to catch up on…

Backup Linebacker Freddy Burton was arrested for DUI this morning. Former Hog Tyson Gay qualified for the US Olympic squad in the 100m. Arkansas Hired Northern Iowa’s Chris Bucknam as the new Track and Field and Cross Country coach replacing legend John McDonnell. Sonny Weems was drafted by Chicago then traded to Denver. Steven Hill has signed a contract to play with Portland’s summer league team.
John Pelphrey auctioned off a round of golf with himself, Bobby Petrino, and LPGAer and former ladyback Stacy Lewis. It went for $5,100. Speaking of Stacy Lewis, she finished tied for 3rd at her first LPGA event as a pro…the US Women’s Open. Petrino’s not a big talker. But The Hog Blogger knows what he’s getting into with Bobby. The Razorbloggers have been counting down the best football games of ’07 (with video)…my fav’s South Carolina and LSU. AOL fanhouse has a story up about if College Football teams were comedians…Arkansas would be Larry the Cable Guy. Which lead me to two other such lists…Rappers-Kool Keith…and Simpsons Characters-Groundskeeper Willie.

The Eliminated Trough

Well the title says it all…the Diamond Hogs dropped their second straight in the NCAA regional and with it got a ticket home. They lost to Stanford 5-1.

Ladyback Dacia Barr won the NCAA Mideast 1,500 meter Title. The Men Track Hogs ended up advancing nine athletes in eight events to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in June. The Mideast Regional was John McDonnell’s last meet in Fayetteville as Head Track Hog. Former University of Arkansas golfer Stacy Lewis Lead the US to its sixth consecutive Curtis Cup victory over Great Britain and Ireland in St. Andrews, Scotland, Sunday. And Finally, thanks to the Expats, I ran into a page of SEC Limericks…very funny stuff.

The Basketball/Misc Trough

In Hoops News…
Michael Sanchez’s trip with Reach USA to China was an eye opener. Arkansas has signed a four year contract to play South Alabama…yes the one Pelphrey came from. Former triplet Ron Brewer, who’s also Ronnie Brewer’s dad, was injured in a car accident Thursday. Sonny Weems is making strides in a NBA pre-draft camp. Joe Johnson had a nice ride…with a large carbon footprint.

Elsewhere…
Former Ladyback Stacy Lewis and her teammates paced the United States to a 4-2 lead after first day action of the 2008 Curtis Cup Match at St. Andrews, Scotland, Friday. The Ladyback Track teams’ Christine Kalmer is headed to the NCAA Championships. Hog Javelin Thrower Luke Laird also qualified. Here’s a wrap up of day one for the men at the Mideast Regional in Track and Field.

Monday Trough

Well uninspired is the word most would use for the final regular season SEC series for the Diamond Hogs. They lost the series 2 games to 1 and finished the conference season 1/2 game out of 8th place in the final SEC standings…and out of the SEC tournament. The Finals from the weekend set are…

Thursday Ark.-5 Miss. St.-6 , Friday Ark.-5 Miss. St.-6 , Saturday Ark.-15 Miss. St.-10.
Rivals has a photo journal of the final game. The Hogs are currently hosting Western Illinois at Baum. Whole Hog Sports is calling it a Must Win. The hogs look to bolster their chances to get into an NCAA Regional. Their RPI hasn’t been updated but this link will update later tonight. Here’s the University’s Baseball Notebook from before tonight’s game.

Turning to other spring sports…
The Men Track Hogs won the SEC Outdoor Track & Field title this weekend, John McDonnell’s last as head coach. The search for his replacement is going at a “steady” pace. Ladyback Tracksters finished third at the meet. The Ladyback Tennis Team finished the season ranked 17th this season after being eliminated in the Elite Eight. It was arguably the best season in school history. The Ladyback Softball team finished it’s season with a loss in the NCAA Regionals to Oregon. Ladyback Miranda Dixon was named to the Louisville Slugger / National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Region team. The Mens Golf Team Finished in 19th place at the NCAA Regional this weekend. The Ladyback Golfers start their Regional tomorrow.

Finally…
College Football News have their WAAAY early bowl predictions up (Hogs V. Nebraska in Indy Bowl). Razorback Hoopster Michael Sanchez has moved from the bench to a starting role for the Reach USA squad in China. The Expats dip into the SI archives to find a Hog football team in turmoil from 1988.

Walk-Off Trough

In case you haven’t heard, the Diamond Hogs recaptured 8th place in the SEC standings with a sweep of #13 South Carolina. The weekend Series at Baum started with a bang when Freshman Jacob House hit a 1-0 pitch into the visiting bleachers for a walk-off grand slam, giving the Hogs a 12-11 win Friday Night. Here’s Video. That powered the Hogs to the sweep with finals of 6-3 Saturday and 4-2. The Hogs Followed that up with a win over Mississippi Valley St. 12-3. The Hogs have a RPI of 16 and are still projected to make a NCAA Regional. AS360 says the season hinges on the final SEC series of the year, at Mississippi St. Here’s a look at team leader Logan Forsythe.

The second annual Paul Eells Stars N Strikes Celebrity Softball Game and Golf Outing is coming up and KATV is publishing more of Paul’s Calls…Via Slophouse and Expats. and Freshman forward Michael Sanchez is headed to China with the Reach USA squad to play in exhibition games against Chinese Pros.

Hog Tyler Hill and Ladyback senior Dacia Barr have been named to the SEC Good Works Team. Alex and Andy McClary, Long Distance Track Hogs, are Profiled. The Ladybacks have another Basketball Signee. The Ladyback Softball team has been selected to the NCAA Tournament. The Ladyback Tennis team has made the Sweet Sixteen. The Ladyback Golfers have advanced out of their regional to the NCAA Championships. The Men’s Golf team looks to do the same.

Finally one of my favorite sites, the one who’s disappearance prompted me to start the Hawg Blawg, has reappeared. The Slop is now being hosted at ARSN online. I won’t stop posting although they probably do a better job of what I aim to do. I just wanted to take a second to thank all of you for coming here and keeping me company. I really appreciate it. Basketball/Misc Trough

Some Former Hogs are having a big impact on the NBA Playoffs. Although they were eliminated Tuesday, Former Hog Joe Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks gave the Boston Celtics all they could handle. Former Hog Jannero Pargo’s play was key in New Orleans’s series win over Dallas and they lead the Spurs 2-0 in their western conference semifinal match up.

Sonny Weems and Stacy Lewis were among the athletes honored at the UA’s Senior Banquet. Arkansas Lady Razorback Katie Stripling set a school record in the pole vault at Friday night’s Arkansas Twilight at John McDonnell Field with a height of 14-2. Stripling and Dacia Barr were name SEC Athlete of the Week Tuesday. Starkitsha Luellen has become the eighth signee of the Lady Backs 08 basketball recruiting class. And finally, the Men’s Golf team is headed to the NCAA Central Regional while the Lady Backs are headed to the NCAA West Regional.

Monday Trough

The Diamond Hogs dodged raindrops at Vanderbilt but couldn’t escape with a win. Friday’s Game was Canceled, Saturday’s Game was finished Sunday morning Ark-5 Vandy-6 (in 12), and in the 2nd game of the double header Sunday Ark-2 Vandy-6. Here’s the Razorbloggers Round Up of the Vandy Series. Here’s a look at this falls’ incoming Hoop Hogs. And the Men’s Tennins team fell to South Carolina 4-3.

In Ladyback News…
The Gym’backs finished 6th at the SEC Championships, and Arkansas’ Co-Coaches Mark and Rene Cook tied with Auburn’s Jeff Thompson and Georgia’s Suzanne Yoculan for Co-Coach of the Year honors. The 13th ranked Ladyback Tennis Squad clinched a share of the Western Division Title with a win over South Carolina 5-2. Stacy Lewis won her 11th collegiate golf tournament Sunday as the Ladyback Golfers finished 4th overall at the Bryan National. Finally the Lady’Back Softball Squad got Swept this weekend by Georgia Fri. UA-1 UGA-3, Sat. UA-1 UGA-13, Sun. UA-1 UGA-3.

The Lady’Back/Misc Trough

The Nationally Ranked (from #12 to #8 depending on the poll) Lady’Back linksters head to the Bryan National in Browns Summit, N. C., the final event of the 2008 season. The No. 11 Gym’Backs heads to Duluth, Ga., site of Saturday’s 2008 SEC Gymnastics Championships. The Lady’Back Tennis Squad jumped nine spots to #13 nationally and junior Ela Kaluder was honored as the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week. The Lady’Back Softball team won the annual Border War Tournament Wednesday. Lady’Back Pole Vaulter Sarah Landau was named SEC Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday while the Lady’Back Track & Field team was ranked No. 9 in the outdoor preseason rankings Wednesday.

Pre-NCAA Trough

Sonny Weems was named To AP All-SEC Team; Charles Thomas and Darrien Townes Earn SEC All-Tournament nods. The Hogs will face Indiana around 8:30pm on Friday in Raleigh, NC. Here’s the highlights from John Pelphrey’s Press Conference on the game. Billy Gillispie is High on the Hogs chances as are the rest of the SEC Coaches. Billy Packer and Jim Nantz will be doing the Arkansas/Indiana game Friday…Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel will be in Little Rock for CBS. Speaking of Little Rock, if your in the area, and don’t have the cash to pony up for some NCAA tickets, they will be having two practice sessions at Alltel Arena this Thursday that will be open to the public. In other Basketball news Former LSU Head Coach John Brady is in talks with Arkansas St. about their HC opening.

In Non basketball news Sparty the Michigan St. Spartan won the NCAA Football 09 vote and will appear on the Wii version of the game. As I’ve mentioned before Darren McFadden will appear on the cover of the XBOX 360 version. They have a nice wallpaper of DMac on their site under the downloads link. Former Hog and UAPB Golden Lion Dedrick Poole has been assigned to the Arkansas Twisters of the AF2. The #6 lady’back golfers were fourth at the end of first round play, Monday, at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. And the Arkansas Men’s Tennis Squad won their 10th of the season beating Hawaii 4-3.

Selection Sunday Trough

Congrats to the Hoop Hogs on making the SEC Tournament Final. They’ll play Georgia, who’ll be tired after playing 2 games Sunday because of a Tornado that hit the Georgia Dome Friday night. The Hogs reached the final by upsetting #4 Tennessee 92-91 on a Steven Hill turnaround jumper. Before that they beat #18 Vandy for the second time in two weeks 81-75. The game will be at 2:30pm CDT on ESPN2.

In other news…The Baseball team is hosting Georgia for their Conference Opener. Arkansas won the series opener 5-1, and lost Saturday 15-11. Nkosinza Balumbu gave Arkansas the NCAA triple jump title Saturday. Finally, the Razorback golf team maintained its lead from day one to win the team title Saturday at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. They finished 5 shots ahead of #24 Lamar. The Thursday Trough

Pelphrey Challenges his big men. RPI will help determine Hogs’ Fate. Golfer Stacy Lewis wins Lady Puerto Rico Classic. College Football News Names Arkansas V. Texas the 11th best Non-Conference game Next Season. Yesterday’s Baseball game V. Southeast Missouri St. was Canceled due to bad weather. Ernie Biggs, the piano bar where D-Mac was admitted entrance and the brawl occurred a couple of months ago, has been fined $500 for the incident. I wanted to remind everyone to Vote For Big Red and for Bud Walton (see below for details).

Monday Trough

Arkansas Loses a big lead late but steals victory from the jaws of defeat against Alabama 71-67 in OT. Felix and D-Mac are going pro (per an ESPN report). Tulsa is on the Razorback Football Schedule for ’08. EA sports visited Bud Walton during the Alabama game to accurately recreate the arena for a March Madness ’08 download. EA will be giving one arena download away for free to the winner of an online vote. The Ladyback Hoops squad fell to 0-2 in conference with a loss to Ole Miss 63-55. Ladyback swimmers pull upset at #18 Mizzou. The track hogs get 4 NCAA provisional-qualifying marks this weekend. Razorback golfer David Lingmerth wins Dixie Amateur.
