After the 76-39 beatdown Kansas put on Nebraska this past weekend, I recalled this quote that appeared in this column on January 19, 2004. This was written after Houston Nutt called Trev Alberts a goofball and Alberts said Nutt was not Nebraska’s choice even though there was a plane from Nebraska waiting in northwest Arkansas.
Why do I mention this passage again? It was quite evident when Callahan was hired that it was done to a great extent for the Nebraska faithful to witness the advent of the forward pass. Winning was not enough ? the fans also demanded entertainment. Even though the previous coach had won 10 games running the ball and was only two years removed from playing in the national championship game, that was not good enough. The message was clear: If you’re going to win or lose, it better be with style. Sound familiar?
