Former Arkansas sprint national champion Tyson Gay leaped onto the national track scene in June after winning the 100- and 200-meter races at the USA Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis. He’s now being compared to Carl Lewis by some. He’s preparing for the World Championships at the end of August.
Unfortunately his coach is behind bars. Former Arkansas assistant Lance Brauman, who coached Gay at Barton County Community College in Kansas, was convicted of five felony counts of mail fraud, embezzlement and theft in July 2006. It was in relation to paying athletes, including Gay, for work they didn’t perform at Barton County Community College. He was sentenced to a year and a day in prison. He is scheduled to be released in September. Brauman resigned his position at Arkansas after his conviction.
